The death of Grace Archer was one of the most controversial Archers episodes when it was broadcast on 22 September 1955. It inspired a spoof by Tony Hancock with his parody, The Bowmans.
And so Langleys is inviting farmers, agricultural professionals and landowners to ‘meet the Bowmans’ and witness their team of solicitors dissect the legal trials and tribulations a family like the Bowmans would face.
Langleys is working in association with the Country Land & Business Association (CLA) to host the events. The region’s agricultural law specialists will be ably assisted by a cast of CLA representatives to set the scene of this turbulent farming family and cover a series of typical situations, such as succession planning, inheritance, employment, personal injury, matrimonial, elderly client issues and wind farm development.
Andrew Fearn, Head of Private Law at Langleys, who specialises in private client law in the agricultural sector said: “The plot lines in soaps are rife with divorce, battles over inheritance, even murder – let’s face it, if anyone needs a good lawyer it’s a character in a soap opera! But seriously, the Bowmans may well be an extraordinary family but we believe that most people who work in agriculture will recognise at least one of the problems which they encounter.”
Andrew added: “Legal issues within farming families and businesses often carry a different perspective. We will be exploring a range of legal problems which often occur in a family business environment in a specific agricultural context. And Langleys' range of expert advisers will be on hand to point the way towards a successful resolution of the Bowmans' difficulties.”
