LANGLEYS DIVERSIFIES WITH LAUNCH OF HEALTH AND WELFARE UNIT

10/09/2009
York and Lincoln based Langleys has launched a new Health and Welfare Unit to deal with highly specialised and unique medical treatment and welfare cases in the High Court and Court of Protection. Susan McKendry is regarded as one of the North of England’s leading solicitors in this aspect of the law and will lead the specialist team. She joins the York office as an Associate Solicitor and will act for people who, because they lack mental capacity and cannot properly manage their own affairs, are unable to represent themselves.

Susan acts on behalf of patients and vulnerable adults helping them to obtain health and community care support from the NHS, local authorities and social services. Susan is regularly instructed by the Official Solicitor and families involved in High Court, Court of Protection and Mental Capacity Act and Human Rights Act cases. She specialises in complex medical treatment and adult welfare cases, drawing on her experience gained whilst working for the Official Solicitor.
Andrew Fearn, Head of Private Law at Langleys comments:“Sue’s appointment allows the firm to operate in a particularly niche and specialised area of the law. There are just a small handful of solicitors acting on behalf of the Official Solicitor in health and welfare cases outside London and we are delighted that Langleys is now one of them.”
The Official Solicitor is a litigation friend of last resort and usually becomes formally involved when appointed by the Court. He may act as his own solicitor, or instruct a private firm of solicitors to act for him.
