Langleys advised the University on all legal aspects of the acquisition from Kendall & Co Ltd and the site includes 1.3 acres of land to the side of the flyover (currently a car park), the marina building and more than 100 of the Brayford's moorings.
Peter Horner, Partner in the Real Estate Unit at Langleys, comments: “The acquisition is a valuable addition to the University’s portfolio and the site is one of considerable visual impact, both looking to and from the University. The University is keen to emphasise that there are no plans a foot to develop the site in a way that will be detrimental to the area. In particular, planning permission for an eleven storey apartment block will not proceed.”
The marina building (which is currently vacant) will be refurbished as accommodation for staff and office space associated with the moorings.
John Plumridge, the University's Director of Estates and Commercial Facilities said: "We will be considering long term options for the site and these will all involve retaining and improving the boat moorings, which we see as a very important asset for the city, culturally and in terms of the Brayford's appeal to visitors.
"We have no intention of developing the site for high rise flats and multi-storey car parking. Instead we will be seeking a use of the land that is sympathetic to the city, makes the most of the surroundings and has been subject to wide consultation with local people.
"This investment will give us more room to develop our teaching spaces in the coming years to help us improve the student experience and attract the best staff."
The University has also recently announced plans for the development of an Engineering Hub on the land between the Marina and Ropewalk
