Environment

Langleys are dedicated to promoting a proactive approach to the environment recognising the many ways our activities have an impact.

We are keen to look at ways of reducing our carbon emissions. Where possible we aim to reduce our impact on the environment looking in particular at energy consumption, recycling, travel, and paper usage.

Office Premises

In 2004, we commissioned Olympic House, a new office building in Lincoln, which was designed to reduce impact on the environment.  It was constructed re-using the steel frame and roof of the site's previous building.  To reduce energy wastage the design incorporated measures to reduce solar glare, an ozone friendly air- conditioning system and a lighting system controlled by movement sensors.  Langleys are actively seeking a site in order to carry out a similar project to re-house their York branch.

Travel

We encourage our staff to use technology instead of travelling, wherever possible, and we promote the use of various software and facilities to minimise business travel.  These include telephone and video conferencing.

If a journey by car is necessary we encourage car sharing where possible.

Paper usage

We have taken steps to minimise our paper usage and to we ensure that the paper we do use comes from sustainable sources.

We use environmentally friendly paper in all our photocopiers and printers. The paper is approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, a not-for-profit organisation set up to improve forest conservation and provide a guarantee that timber products come from forests that are well managed according to social, economic and environmental standards.

We have implemented automated double-sided printing where possible across the firm.  We estimate that this has led to a reduction in paper usage of approximately 25%.

In addition, we encourage the use of electronic communication both within the firm and externally which also contributes to reducing the amount of paper we use.

Manuals, policies, telephone directories are all made available on our intranet rather than being printed.

Waste and recycling

All of our confidential wastepaper is shredded and recycled by a contractor.

For non-confidential waste paper, newspapers, cards, magazines and books, we have recycling bins around our office floors for staff use.

Cans, cardboard, paper and certain plastics are recyclable via bins on each floor of our buildings.
